Playwright & Founder (1945–2023)
A native of Trinidad and Tobago and a multifaceted artist—actress, director, singer, pianist, and ethnic folk dancer—who dedicated her life to arts education in the Northeast Bronx. “The Children’s Legacy” is her signature work, and this production is dedicated to her enduring vision.
Director & Costume Designer
Based in Harlem, Carolyn is a director, choreographer, and arts educator with over three decades of experience in youth and community-based theater. Her collaborations span artists such as Camille A. Brown and Ronald K. Brown, and she has designed costumes for Alvin Ailey, Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, and Evidence, A Dance Company.

A Bronx-raised New Yorker, Leah began her artistic journey at CAPAS and performed in “The Children’s Legacy” at off-Broadway theaters by age 10. A Talent Unlimited High School dance major, she trained at Ailey Camp and NYSSSA and danced on MTV’s Global Groove. She is the proud owner of L.De.Dance School in Paterson, NJ and Charlotte, NC.
Co-Director & Original Cast Member
Introduced to Lola Louis at age 7, Shakira became the original teen lead of “The Children’s Legacy” and now returns to co-direct, giving honor to Lola’s memory, passion, and love for all children of the African Diaspora.
Stage Manager
An integral part of CAPAS since 1993, Arnela has served as Choreographer, Instructor, Backstage Manager, Performer, and Assistant to Artistic Director Lola Louis, developing folkloric and Afro-Caribbean choreography for the company.
Production Designer / Manager
A 35-year CAPAS alum and Lola’s godson, Sajari made his debut as the baby in the first run of “The Children’s Legacy.” He is now Technical Production Manager for Out of the Box Theatrics, with credits including “Beau: The Musical” and “Kowalski.”
